I started doing multifandom exchanges on ao3 back in 2018, and in the years I've been participating, there have been many changes - even as the whole mode of fandom keeps many of its core attributes. I've been chatting on bluesky about it and getting frustrated with the character length restrictions so I'm writing this here so I can get the whole thing written out.

When I started, there were a lot fewer multifandom exchanges, at least known to me and the group of fans I hang out with (and I'm pretty sure there were just many fewer). The biggest one then (and still) is Yuletide, which has existed since before ao3 was made (and from what I gather, is part of what ao3 was made for, even if a small part). The exchange functionality built into ao3 is in the "Collections" part of the site, and under that "Challenges" - all the parts of fandom exchanges (see the ao3 exchange article on fanlore.org for details) usually utilize, which was built for Yuletide originally and also for other exchanges that date from that time, a few of which are still extant, such as Purimgifts and Trick or Treat.

The biggest ones after Yuletide, in 2018 and early 2019, were Chocolate Box (hasn't run the past few years, but a replacement Candy Hearts has shown up that runs just like Chocolate Box used to, revealing gifts on Valentines Day) and Trick or Treat. All these had in common their ties to specific holidays: Yuletide to Christmas, Chocolate Box to Valentines Day, Trick or Treat to Halloween. As far as I know (even though I wasn't around, so this is hearsay) things hadn't changed that much from 2011-2018.

The biggest change in that time frame (from the inception of Yuletide on ao3, to early 2019) that I am aware of is the rise of "freeform exchanges." This is a modality where, along with the fandom, the characters and/or ship, the participants request a particular trope. Freeform exchanges began, I think, because participants were very choosy about what sort of erotica they wanted to request - and matching that required this level of granularity that hadn't previously been needed. So I think the biggest two freeform exchanges initially were "Smut Swap" and "Nonconathon" - the latter is still extant, the former has been replaced by a clone (like how candy hearts replaced chocolate box). There is also Multi-Fandom Tropefest which is fairly old, and Fandom 5k likewise - all four of these started before I joined the exchange scene.

In summer 2019 everything started to change. (I'm not sure how much of this is public nor how much the various people involved want their handles attached, so I'm going to be vague and use initials) A specific fan M. set out to test the Collection/Challenge/Exchange ao3 functionality to its limits, creating exchanges with wild and heretofore never tried rules and moderation/admin practices, not to mention writing and requesting chaos. This showed the community the flexibility of what exchanges could do and could be, and nearly immediately, other fans picked up on doing this. I did, and S. did, and F., as well as other accomplices šŸ˜„ Because so many new people jumped into running these easy and short term "flash exchanges" (as they became known), the community of people who had some experience moderating and running an exchange grew.

Also for a while, MVP fan K. had been creating a webapp for Yuletide for a few years. At some point in I think 2020, K. expanded this into a more general webapp that could scrape any exchange request set and make the requests far easier to find for what a given participant wanted to create. K. is still updating and supporting this app, running a brief fundraiser yearly that quickly accumulates enough money to fund its bandwidth usage.

Between these two factors, the number of exchanges and the breadth of types of exchanges blew up.

One of the biggest exchanges I now do, with nearly as much work produced as Yuletide (albeit by only a quarter the number of participants) is Fic in a Box. It was inspired by F.'s participation in one of M.'s offbeat flash exchanges, spinning F.'s love of "tedious details" and spreadsheets into a fanwork exchange where not only fic, but also art, and many other modes of fan creation (there are over a hundred options, like softer world comic strips, logic puzzles, and drink recipes) are created and given without any specific holiday or trope in mind, in any fandom that is desired.

There are so many exchanges now that there are literally no gaps in the calendar in which a new one can be placed that doesn't overlap two or three already existing ones. Every particpant has to pick and choose which ones to sign up for and put their effort into creating for. This means that while the particpiation in Yuletide specifically is shrinking, the overall pool of multifandom exchange participants has been growing. New fandoms tend to pull their members in like waves - for example, a recent wave brought a lot of Minecraft Lets Play fans in, who write fic about the youtube minecraft players' roleplays.
Details on my general likes are at this Dreamwidth post

This letter is pretty much exactly what I put in the requests; but since they're hidden for now, I'm putting it in a letter to make it more accessible. There are also links to the podcasts.

Fandoms requested:

Three podcasts:
Vampire the Masquerade Port Saga podcast (two seasons)
Sinkhole podcast (two seasons plus an extra bonus episode)
Achewillow podcast (seven seasons)

Three novels: (these all can stand alone, though there may be connected other work by the respective authors that you are free to consult or not as you prefer)
Siren Queen by Nghi Vo
The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
Diaspora by Greg Egan

Request 1 by Gammarad
Fandom: Vampire: The Masquerade Port Saga (Podcast)

My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)

Nominated characters: Titus Reed, Edmund Glass, Constance, Adelaide Hale, Lysander Valentine

I really loved Port Saga, how it portrayed Malkavians especially, but and the other clans as well; the twistiness and tension it had, the main character Titus and many of the supporting characters (including all nominated ones as well as Erin MacKenna, Ezra Knox, Rebel Everhart, Lawrence Bennet, Marlowe Voight, Dante Mendoza, Primogen Zelda, and Keisha Troy. I'd be happy with a story focusing on any of these characters listed as well as any of the nominated ones. Any canon typical topic is fine; ship fic ideally would be complicated and messy rather than fix-it and happy, given that, any f/f or m/m ship is welcome; noncon and dubcon are fine.

DNWs: (my DNWs are different per request, please check carefully)
- AUs making the vampire characters not vampires; AU setting changes;
- crossovers that take the characters out of the canon setting; focus on characters from other fandoms, including related world of darkness fandoms (having them as background characters is fine);
- anything requiring the "underage" archive warning;
- f/m ship as the focus (background f/m ships are fine).

Request 2 by Gammarad
Fandom: Sinkhole (Podcast)

My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)

Nominated characters: Narrator, Worldbuilding

I love this podcast so much, with the lecturing, exasperated tone the narrator takes, I can listen to it over and over. I love the way the worldbuilding is built up over multiple episodes and things are hinted at. The various concepts of the Jackson Millennium building's oddness, how it sets fires, people get lost in it, and then it falls into a mysterious hole that makes weird sounds, and the narrator's science fictional disability keeping them from fully participating in the NEV.

Nonbinary narrator being out of touch with the world because of having missed so many years is also a great way to get the listeners in to the story. And the shocker at the end with the narrator's shady past being hinted at... I'd love to read more about any aspect of the setting, what it's like for or more about what kind of experiments they were doing (and still are) in the JMB or Sinkhole protected area)

DNWs: (my DNWs are different per request, please check carefully)
- explicit rating or any smut;
- changing canon genders or pronouns of any canon character (use whatever you want for OCs)
- anything requiring noncon or underage warnings
- setting change AUs of any kind
- intentional harm done to pets or children; threats made to pets or children to emotionally affect them or others
- crossovers (exception: using background characters from other fandoms is fine)

Request 3 by Gammarad
Fandom: Siren Queen - Nghi Vo

Selected Characters: Tara Lubowski,Luli Wei | Narrator (Siren Queen)
My gift must feature one or more of my chosen character tags (giver's choice)

I love the stylishness and the storytelling of Siren Queen, the world of moviemaking with the influx of myth, legend, and traditional stories as part of the living world. I have not read anything else by the author, but I've heard there's other stories with the same worldbuilding, feel free to use that information or not as you choose.

Any canon typical topic is fine; I like both gen fic and ship fic; with ship fic I prefer complicated and messy rather than fix-it and happy - given that, any f/f ship you'd like to focus on is welcome; dubcon is fine; any canon ships are fine, too, to appear as you like.

Who are the true gods of the land who have to be propitiated, and how does everything work so smoothly and yet so weird

DNWs: (my DNWs are different per request, please check carefully)
- explicit underage sex
- characters changing gender or sexual orientation from canon
- mundane AUs that take away the magic, or any AUs that make the characters younger than in the book
- crossovers of any kind

Request 4 by Gammarad
Fandom: The Space Between Worlds - Micaiah Johnson

My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)

Nominated Characters: none

I love this story's multiple levels of world building as it creates many worlds, a main one, and several secondary ones that the characters travel to. I love the relationship between Cara and Dell. I love all the minor and secondary characters. Feel free to stick to the main world or to explore any of the others, and to use any characters from the book, and to make up original characters as needed.

After a quick check, there is a follow up novel to this that seems to be in the same (or connected) setting, but I haven't read it (I will be reading it soon so no worries about spoilers though). Please feel free to either include or exclude it as a basis of what you create for me, I don't mind either way.

My general exchange likes are here

DNWs: (my DNWs are different per request, please check carefully)
- incest between siblings or between generations of a family
- any ship fic between main character Cara and someone other than Dell

Request 5 by Gammarad
Fandom: Diaspora - Greg Egan

My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)

Nominated characters: Yatima, Hermann, Worldbuilding

I love the story from the beginning where Yatima is born through the algorithm and then grows up, to the part where the characters are exploring the multiverse. The part where two characters go into mechanical bodies to interact with the last physical humans is really great, as are all the parts with discovering and talking to aliens. That said, the way the virtual-people society itself works is the most interesting thing of all.

DNWs (my DNWs are different per request, please check carefully): smut, explicit sex, romance or couples focus ("shipfic") (background ships are fine), changing canonical pronouns used for characters

Request 6 by Gammarad
Fandom: Achewillow (Podcast)

My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)

Nominated characters: Ophelia, Helen Edna, Miriam DuFour, Agnes

Miriam is an infuriating protagonist as she almost never seems to learn from her experiences, but instead returns to her habits as if the things didn't happen. Still, she's vastly enjoyable to listen to and spend time with, and her food sounds amazing.

I also like lots of other characters, especially Annabel. Feel free to put everyone you want in the story, as long as at least one of the nominated characters gets a reasonably major role.

Ship fic is also fine; feel free to pair the characters up with anyone who you see them with, their canon love interests or someone else. For this fandom, I'm good with f/f or f/m ship as the focus. I also think I'd like Miriam with any of the other three nominated characters.

DNWs (my DNWs are different per request, please check carefully):
- anything that you would estimate requires the "underage" or "noncon" archive warnings
- any characters outright stating a sexual orientation in dialogue or reported dialogue
- AUs taking the characters out of the town of Achewillow, or sending them to school (but an AU exploring different professions would be fine)

FFFX letter for Gammarad on AO3

requesting:

- The Space Between Worlds

Ideas!

Comics ... I'd love a comic showing a flashback to how Caralee reacted to meeting Dell, or a comic about them moving in together or going on a date, or [either/both] of them meeting someone secretly about a thing - you make up the thing - or them interacting with Earth-0 Cara's family? Or for worldbuilding comic, show another Earth, Dell of another Earth, maybe, or alternates of some other characters; or show the other-earth people who are coming to Earth-0 and what they're doing...

Fics ... how about Cara lying (or trying to lie) to Dell about something important, and what that sets off; or a visitor from another Earth and what happens to them (which can include worldbuilding or Cara/Dell); or an expanded version of the comics prompts maybe? Or some kind of mission-fic type of story where Cara goes to another Earth and does a thing? I'd be very happy with any of first, second, or third person narrative, or a mix.

- Drop-Out

I love the Drop-Out comic and these characters. I can't stop thinking about them sometimes for hours on end. Their personalities and expressiveness are so immersive and compelling! I don't really have much in the way of ideas and prompts about them but honestly I would read a comic of them holding hands and talking about things that happened to them or about ideas or books they read or tv shows they watched or what color they want to paint or wallpaper their room or future home? About other people they met and those people's problems to avoid discussing their own?

As for a fic, I think it would need more story, and I am open to a story that is parallel where the two of them are not together for much of it, if that would be interesting. As well as a more conventional one where they're doing things together. Like, what if they are separate, and doing things, and there's parallels between the things Lola is doing and the things Sugar is doing, yet not the same things because they're such different people? There could be a framing bit where they are together, or maybe they meet at one point in the story briefly, but it's fine if they are mostly separate, or if the story is mostly about just one of them and the other just shows up briefly. I'd be very happy with any of first, second, or third person narrative, or a mix.

- Will Trent

So, Josiah is only in one episode but he's amazing in it and instantly became my favorite when he gave the speech about how he's a multi season Shonda Rhimes show, I'd love to see a comic of his life or a fic about one of his cases or his love affairs or both. Use as many (or few) OCs as you want for this!

As for Faith and Will, I really like their growing partnership through the series and would love to read a casefic with them solving something, or trying to, or a friendship fic with a case in the background could also work? Feel free to put any other characters from the show in the fic or comic. Comic ideas for the two of them, maybe walking Betty together, or going to an event at a local school or college, or showing each other photos? Or the comic showing them working on a case together with a wall of case-analysis stuff?

- Leverage

I really loved the new character of Breanna Casey and what she brought to the team, and having three women working together on something gives me joy. A comic about them running a con together? or one of them can be showing the other two how to do something she specializes in?

A story about them helping someone through a con they run together? Or a story about one of them helping the other two in order to get a favor that she then calls in to get help herself?

DNWs: as in request but also one extra I didn't think of at the time: kinking on the destruction of something because of its especial expensiveness or value.

The DNWs from the requests: anything that'd rate the ao3 "underage" warning, intergenerational incest, sibling incest, bulging or inflation kink, age-play, injuries involving exposed bone, any sex that goes against a character's stated-in-the-work sexual orientation (like if they say "I am gay" and then have het sex, even if noncon), characters making threats to children or pet animals to cause emotional distress or to compel action by other characters, serious harm to children or pet animals intended by the inflicter of the harm to cause emotional distress to others, characters reacting to the death of their children or their pet animals
Yuletide Letter

I'm Gammarad on AO3 and I have requested the following:

Almost Nowhere
Empire Star
Patternist series
Provenance

My general likes page

Almost Nowhere is here on ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/8341348

Nominated characters are Azad, Cordelia, Sylvester, and Cat

As long as you include one of those four, anything about this novel would be great. It's been a bit of a companion to me since I started using ao3 and I'm excited to be able to request it in an exchange.

For Azad, a story about translation would be cool, he's especially interesting to me as a translator. Or a ship story with any of his canonical relationships if that's what you're most interested in writing - I really enjoy getting to vicariously enjoy someone else's enthusiasm via reading. Or something that's epistolary as in, a thing notionally written by Azad, either canonically or divergently.

For Cordelia, a story about being a fan, as she is the most fangirlish of the characters, or a story about any of her canonical ships, or about her interactions with the Ells? Or her pursuits after the novel's end. Again, a document supposedly written by her would be very interesting to me, also.

For Sylvester, he is to me the most interesting of the anomaling characters, so I'd love to see his point of view explored. Maybe he has some more to share, information wise or experience, or maybe he splits off and part of him does something different? His take on some of the events of the story where the reader doesn't really get to see how he reacts would also be super intriguing.

For Cat, who is a very minor character, I kind of would like to know Cat's POV and also back story. And a fix-it for Cat where the terrible fate that ends up happening is softened a bit would be sweet, if it's possible. Angst about Cat is also a potential way to go, with Eleven POV maybe, or one of the other Beasts who perhaps was Cat's friend.

DNW: Change of setting AUs and crossovers (canonical setting change *crashes* are fine, though! It can superficially look like a setting change AU / crossover as long as it eventually proves to be in the novel setting really.) Deaging characters to preadolescence. / ships between requested characters and OCs.

Patternist Series by Octavia Butler - character: Anyanwu

Anyanwu is the main character in Wild Seed and I'd be fine with a story that is based just on Wild Seed, but also happy with one that draws from the other books in the Patternist series (I have read them all, though it was long ago).

DNW: explicit sex of any kind, implied sex with people under 18, unrequested crossovers, depiction or description of injuries that clearly involve exposed bone

Prompts: There are a lot of possibilities for Anyanwu to interact with various people throughout her long life. With her children, with their other parents, with her descendants, with strangers. In all sorts of shapes, or her own. This is really wide open, but what I'd like is to see how Anyanwu is Anyanwu no matter who or what she's "being" at that given moment. Hope that makes sense. I also really love worldbuilding, so anything you can do to show how Doro's project or the rise of psychics changes Anyanwu's world from ours would be great. As long as she's in the story, she doesn't have to be the focus of it if you're doing a worldbuilding kind of story. Also feel free to use any other characters from the series, and any characters from the two crossover option books.

Crossover requests: Who Fears Death - Nnedi Okorafor; Touch - Claire North

Provenance by Ann Leckie - part of the Imperial Radch series
Characters: Tic Uisine and the Geck Ambassador

It's clear from the events of Provenance that Tic and the Geck Ambassador go way back, but the exact thing that's going on has a lot of room for stories. I'd be happy for any type of story that focuses on either of these two characters and includes both of them. It is fine for it to also include other aspects of the Imperial Radch series and characters that aren't in Provenance, whether or not you'd think of that as a crossover.

I love the whole Imperial Radch series but I'm most interested in Provenance and its characters. If you want to combine these or make additional world-building topics in Provenance parts of the universe, I'm here for it. What I love about Provenance: the characters, the different cultures and how they all interact, the intensity of the strained relationships each of the nominated characters has with their parents and how those tie into the way their world is arranged -- the parental figures have used these characters to advance what they see as the right way of their cultures, and it's cost them all.

some freeforms I've requested in the past that might serve as prompts:

Adopted Sibling RelationshipParent/child relationship - difficult relationshipParent/child relationship - different worldviews
Complicated Relationship with a Parental Figure
Small lie or pretense spirals out of control
Character struggling with carrying a legacy they have been bestowed with
Small moment of happiness before everything falls apart
Rashomon-Style Conflicting Narratives
Character does horrible things on purpose; agrees they're horrible; is very sorry; does them anyway
Finicky Details About What It's Like To Live In A Particular Setting

DNW: Setting change AU, unrequested crossover, explicit sexual content, injuries to humans involving exposed bone

Empire Star is a space opera fairy tale about oppression, the loss of innocence, and the author's feelings about being a queer black New Yorker crystallized into metaphorical eternity. It is a contender for the most identity porn ever crammed into a single short novel.

I also requested this in writing rainbow white, and the tags there make a perfect constellation of the range of things I would like in a fic for this novel. These are the freeforms:

Sad character earns deserved happy ending
So many delicious setting details and so much atmosphere
outer space is super cool but also completely terrifying
Does It Count As Saving the World If You're the One That Put it in Danger?
Fairy Tale Elements
outsider pov
Past wrongs result in not quite forgiveness and not quite not forgiveness either
Legendarily Bad Taste In People To Be Attracted To
Bonding over bearing the burden of cursed knowledge
Anything you think I might like
Adopting an Alien Pet
Sufficiently Advanced Alien Is Indistinguishable From A Cat

DNWs: explicit underage smut, injuries to humans involving exposed bone, crossovers unless cleared through the moderators

-----

My worldbuilding likes are pretty much all the types.

I like the long discursive essay about how the sewer system works in the middle of the chase scene through the sewer, and I like the careful insertion of telling detail into the chase scene almost unnoticed until you realize at the end of it that you know exactly why this sewer has bends there and low ceilings here. I also like when the characters stop to argue about why the sewer is like this and get caught.

I think my favorite is when the worldbuilding communicates a strong point of view about the stuff it's showing/telling, and when seemingly separate bits of it turn out to be deeply connected.

At the bottom you'll see a list of fandoms I'm *considering* adding requests for - comment (all comments screened) if you think I should request one of them. (as long as it's before signups close, of course) Nu guarantee I will have the inspiration to come up with prompts etc, but it could influence me for sure!

Fandoms I'm requesting:

General Likes:

Character, setting, and theme likes: cats (including cat-like fantasy creatures or spirits), aliens (including cat-like and human-like aliens as well as ones like nothing at all on Earth), friendship, rivalry, enemies, eerie supernatural stuff, unusual settings, ancient history (BCE), science fiction, technology, AI, robots, cyborgs, worldbuilding. Older mature characters.

Gen (& relationship) likes: Loyalty - either one way or mutual, enemies who have a certain understanding, colleagues who rely on each other, colleagues who undermine each other, employee & employer relationship either with loyalty or with one using the other, parent & child relationships with protectiveness, student & teacher relationships with mutual desire to learn, criminal & victim relationships with complexities, bounty hunter & target relationships where they have to be taken alive (or where the target is just that hard to kill), stranger & potential new friend (but also potential new threat) relationships, allies of convenience. One character noticing things about the other and sharing insights (or not, as their character dictates). Doing something meaningful without being asked. Bickering. Using someone's observed weakness against them. The way only someone close to them can hurt them like that.

Romantic (/ relationship) likes: Pining, previous and/or background ships, cheating or adultery, equal partnerships, casual consensual D/s elements, different sorts of beings (like AI/human or vampire/human or AI/vampire or alien/different kind of alien, you get the idea) in love. Being able to see what makes that person the one they want. Being perfect for each other but not knowing it yet. Characters struggling to figure out how to show their love. Characters who have good reason to think the person they want isn't right for them but can't help it. Obsessive unhealthy love. Complicated relationships with give and take and balance issues. Canon poly.

Plotty likes: intelligent non-humans, learning to get along despite differences, working out misaligned goals. Myth inspired plots or fairy tale retellings, mysteries, ghost stories, adventure stories, coming of age stories, romances, case or mission fic, noir style, pastiche of canon, pastiche of something other than the canon you're actually writing. Happy for now endings, bittersweet endings, knowing what you have won't last forever, getting what they want and realizing it's not what they need, getting what they need even though it wasn't what they thought they wanted, taking what they can get in lieu of what they really need or want.

Smut likes: Older human characters having explicit sex. Saying with physical affection what they can't say out loud. Solving problems in sex (difficulty climaxing, premature ejaculation, injury does not allow for their usual sex, that kind of thing). Sex toys, improvised sex toys, edging, honor bondage, orgasm denial. D/s (with equal amounts of experience or with the submissive person more experienced, I also like couples who switch who is dominant), vampires with sexy blood drinking, aliens with strange genitalia, robots or cyborgs with technological genitalia.

Style likes: I like a whole broad variety of styles. First person, second person, omniscient narrator (like a historian or telepath or seer or deity), same as canon, totally different from canon for reasons, carefully preserved realism, blend of realism vs fantastical elements, fourth wall breaking, epistolary, unreliable narrator, close third person, out-of-order storytelling, time jumps, dream scenes, surreal or stream-of-consciousness interludes, main character viewpoint, outsider viewpoint including POV of AI, cats, ghosts, deities, or other unusual being. For all writing-style options, go with whatever best suits your personal style or your chosen story.

The Culture

  • GOU Falling Outside the Normal Moral Constraints & Lededje Y'breq

  • Vyr Cossont & Ngaroe QiRia

  • Solo: Any Culture or Ex-Culture Mind

The first two above are from Surface Detail and Hydrogen Sonata respectively. For the third, any mind from either of those would be great, or anyone from Look to Windward or Excession also would work very well. But really I'm good with whatever Mind you find evocative or inspiring for the third request, and have them interacting with anyone at all.
(I don't care for Zakalwe and would somewhat prefer he not show up in the gift).

Prompts: An Ex-Culture Mind and its activities that it couldn't do inside the Culture

A day in the life of a GSV or Station Mind

A Special Circumstances intervention from the POV of an involved Mind, or the Mind's intervention from POV of the non-Culture people being interfered with

A chat-fic between Minds having a conversation like they do

Vyr and Ngaroe in a post-Hydrogen Sonata meet up or in a parallel two-storyline story where they each do something that somehow mirrors or foils the other. Vyr and Ngaroe in a canon-deviation AU where they do something different from what they did in the book.

Lededje and the OU, or the OU's avatar, post-Surface Detail meet up or in a parallel two-storyline story where they each do something that somehow mirrors or foils the other. Lededje and Falling Outside... do something different than they did in the book, with surprising (or not so surprising) results.

The Luminous Dead

  • Em Arasgain/Gyre Price

I would most want a future fic for these characters where they're together, in whatever form that takes, and a sci-fi approach to the story. Focus on the worldbuilding as much or as little as is comfortable - I'd be fine with 99% worldbuilding / 1% shipfic or just 100% shipfic with the world barely there as a backdrop.

I'm also interested in (mostly-nonviolent) noncon or dubcon between these characters, or a one-sided relationship where one of them is obsessed and the other is not nearly as into it, or over it, or afraid of what the other would do so is trying to stay away.

I'd be happy with explicit sex in this request.

If you want to do pre-canon, perhaps add a framing that's post canon with the / ship part in it?

DNW Setting-change AUs for this that make it no longer sci-fi; an AU with a somewhat different but still sci-fi setting would be fun, though.

The Space Between Worlds

  • Earth-22 Cara
  • Earth-22 Cara/Earth-0 Dell

I read this book and got into this fandom for Yuletide 2022. It was great - the setup with parallel worlds and one of them exploiting the rest has so much potential, the characters are vivid and compelling, the whole thing is full of possibilities for fic.

Cara could go to one of the Earths not visited in the book; she could meet visitors from whichever of the other dimensions might somehow (in canon divergence or post canon) be able to visit her; she could explore more of her own Earth (22) or of the one she lives on (not 22) - she and Dell could work on their relationship, or they could have a nice time together, or they could fight and (maybe) break up, or get together in a different way than in the book. Also I love worldbuilding so if you want to focus on that and have the character or ship just there in the story while it's the world that gets all the development, that's absolutely fine - the novel gives both a lot of great material, but an exchange fic won't necessarily have the space for everything, so having the requested character and/or ship present as a vehicle for worldbuilding is a fine way to approach it. Or ignore the worldbuilding entirely except as a background for character and/or ship focus, that's also a fine approach!

I'm open to very messy relationships for this pairing, or super happy and sweet, however you want to go with it. Like, write me one of them (or both!) cheating and the other finding out, great; write me one of them thinking the other is dead, excellent; write them on a honeymoon after they get married, also wonderful. Even if Dell actually died and then Cara encounters another version of Dell who can now visit Earth-0? (or, possibly more plausibly, the other way around, since there are a few Caras left). Wouldn't that be a trip.

Yellow and the Perception of Reality

  • WB: Claude the Octopus

  • Solo: Kyle Choi

  • Solo: Wanda Harris

I'm very interested in worldbuilding for this story, as well as in the characters selected. Feel free to have any additional canon characters interacting with the selected character, or any original characters too.

The concept of the breaking of how reality is perceived is always so interesting in fiction, and this story is no exception! I requested it in Yuletide before and all those prompts are still welcome:

What happens when Wanda finally relearns how to talk and interact? Does she spread the damaging knowledge or is it too incomprehensible to communicate? What is Claude up to that the aquarium keepers don't know about? We barely learn anything about Kyle, what was his life like, and what led him to take the path he did? You could do a canon divergence where Kyle survives instead of Wanda, maybe a role reversal between their two parts, and June visits Kyle instead, trying to learn what happened to her sister from him perhaps?

Second Person, Present Tense

  • Terry/Joelly

I've sort of low key been wanting a ship fic for Joelly (the girl who calls her "Miss T") in love with Therese and then falling for / being courted by Terry since I read this story. Not sure why it struck me so hard but that's how it is. So anything for this nonexistent pairing in this nonexistent fandom would be great.

That said, I also adore the world building in the story and would love a story about an original character who takes the drug and has a very different experience from what Terry goes through, amybe in the same recovery facility she was in, or a meta type story in the form of a reddit or other social media fic, or magazine articles or the like, about the drug and its effects, or the "cures" and their survivors, and so on. I adore that sort of thing.

Hello

I'm Gammarad on ao3 and this is my Yuletide signup letter.

My general likes are here: General Likes for Exchange Gifts

This letter is going to contain mostly what I like about each requested character & fandom, and possibly some prompts if you want them. Please feel free to ignore my prompts and get your inspiration solely from my list of likes linked above if that's your preference.

DNWs for requests 1-2: underage sex; incest kink; noncon with requested character as victim

DNWs for requests 3-6: explicit sex - noncon with requested character as victim - serious threats or purposeful harming of dependents or loved ones (including pets) of characters to psychologically harm them - underage (not adults in their own culture) characters depicted being involved in sexual relationships - injuries involving exposed bone

Requests:

1. Brand New Cherry Flavor - Lisa Nova

2. Laundry Files - Cassie (either one is fine, no distinction was made in the nomination - so you can write about the original human Cassie or the being who took over the identity of Cassie - or both!)

3. The Culture - Vyr Cossont

4. Teixcalaan - Nine Hibiscus

5. Midst - Saska del Norma

6. Midnight Burger (any - none nominated)

Request 1 - Brand New Cherry Flavor, Lisa Nova

Please feel free to pair her with either Roy or Mary for a / pairing or with either Boro or Code for an & pairing, or write about her solo, or write her with Worldbuilding. The requested character doesn't need to be the focus of the gift, as long as she's substantially present.

What I liked about this story was the style of it, the interpersonal relationships depicted, Lisa's ambitiousness and her willingness to go further than she knew she ought to. I'd enjoy something set before, during, or after the canonical story, as well as divergence.

Request 2 - Laundry files, Cassie

Please feel free to write about the original Cassie or about the being who replaced her for most of the book - I'm equally interested in both, though I definitely know the replacement Cassie better due to her having more page time in Nightmare Stacks. I think that book was my favorite of the entire series, and I like the whole series quite a bit. If my overall list of requests gives you the idea I like things that have a mixture from fantasy/sci fi with horror elements and with a character-driven humor aspect, you might be right.

There's something really compelling to me about the particular tropes this book was working with, and what the author did with them, blending the ordinary sort of workplace-dystopian rom-com set pieces with the horror-sci-fi-fantasy story arc. Also I just liked the character, in both versions, the playful and friendly young woman and the angsty yet calculating monstrous fae. I liked how their combined story worked its way through the overall one. During or post-Nightmare Stacks is probably best for this request, probably? Feel free to diverge the tale from that book or to stick with her canonical continuation in future books.

Request 3 - The Culture, Vyr Cossont

Hydrogen Sonata was so good I didn't want to let go of it, so now I'm returning to it for a request since Vyr was a nominated character. Feel free to set the story about her before, during, or after that book's story, and to bring in any secondary character from that book.

I love her interactions with various other Culture characters as shown in the book, and also her history on Gzilt, what we got of it - something about her younger years there would be good, as well as a canon divergence or canon follow-up set after the ending of Hydrogen Sonata.

Request 4 - Teixcalaan, Nine Hibiscus

Her previous battles, younger years on the way up to her position, her interactions with people back on the capital rather than just on her ship; canon divergence where she goes into a different career could also be interesting.

I really like her personality and way of dealing with things and people. She's so different from the other characters in the series she's from, in terms of aggression and directness especially, yet there's a similarity in a way to some of the others, too. They're all in tune in some way I can't quite pin down - but I suspect has to do with that story-symmetry her culture values so much!

Request 5 - Midst, Saskia del Norma

I love Midst so much for its setting and all the characters. Please feel free to have Saskia interacting with Moc, Sherman, Imelda, or Lark, of the nominated characters. Also I'd love if you wanted to include worldbuilding into the story.

The thing that made me request Saskia in particular is her physical transformation between seasons of the show - I'd love something that explores either, if set before the change, what made her the sort of person that the Fold would do that to; or if set after the change, how she's adapting or struggling with the new self she's been given.

Request 6 - Midnight Burger, any

Midnight Burger is so much fun. The characters stand out for me, and I'd love a story that centers on Gloria the newcomer, Shel the plant person, Ava the physicist, Effie the radio personality, or even the Ex, such a mysterious created being that she is. They're a few of my favorite characters. I'd also love a worldbuilding story set in the Midnight Burger universe about something in the past of the whole thing, if you're more inclined for that.
Global Likes - for Gammarad on ao3

General likes: cats (including cat-like fantasy creatures or spirits), aliens (including cat-like and human-like aliens as well as ones like nothing at all on Earth), friendship, rivalry, enemies, vampires, eerie supernatural stuff, unusual settings, ancient history (BCE), science fiction, technology, AI, robots, cyborgs, worldbuilding. Older mature characters. A character explaining some aspect of reality to another - teaching another to do a thing - explaining how to solve a math problem, for example

/ ship likes: Pining, previous and/or background ships, cheating or adultery, equal partnerships, casual consensual D/s elements, different sorts of beings (like AI/human or vampire/human or AI/vampire or alien/different kind of alien, you get the idea) in love. Canon poly.

Noncon or dubcon likes: captivity scenarios, emotional blackmail, self-destructive or reckless plans or spontaneous choices, intelligent non-humanoid creatures who have no reason to like or respect humans or humanoids but find them fun or desirable playthings or pawns, obsessive attachment and pursuit; (for more see Consent Issues letter)

& ship likes: Loyalty - either one way or mutual, enemies who have a certain understanding, colleagues who rely on each other, colleagues who undermine each other, employee & employer relationship either with loyalty or with one using the other, parent & child relationships with protectiveness, student & teacher relationships with mutual desire to learn, criminal & victim relationships with complexities, bounty hunter & target relationships where they have to be taken alive (or where the target is just that hard to kill), stranger & potential new friend (but also potential new threat) relationships, allies of convenience. One character noticing things about the other and sharing insights (or not, as their character dictates). Doing something meaningful without being asked. Bickering. Using someone's observed weakness against them. The way only someone close to them can hurt them like that.

Really, go with whatever best suits your personal style or your chosen story.

Art likes: I like art of abstract subject matter, of stylized or nonrepresentational, and I like still lifes. I also enjoy pictures of cats and other animals in almost any style. When it comes to portraits or action pictures, I enjoy seeing emotions portrayed by the characters, or just looking pretty, or a kind of character study through picture. I like anything from uninked sketches to black and white to limited color palette to cel shading to full painting-style color.

For comics, I'm happy with there being backgrounds or not, art from stick figure (xkcd & Order of the Stick being two of my favorite webcomics for example) to simplified cartoons to comic-book styles or manga styles. I enjoy comics in newspaper, webtoon scroll column, and page-layout styles as well.
This year I participated in 28 exchanges (If I didn't miss any - it's possible).

DNWs: Any sexual activity with children under 16, any explicit sex with any character under 18 or who is not an adult in their setting and culture, stories focused on serial killers, nonconsensual sex with a member of a gender they aren't attracted to (you don't have to establish that they're attracted to that sex, just don't establish that they aren't), setting change AUs like coffeeshop AU or omegaverse AU or unrequested crossover AU that takes my requested characters to another story's setting.

(It would be completely fine if you want to bring characters from another canon into the world of one of my requests as cameos, though, as long as the story has focus on the requested setting/worldbuilding, and you give enough information about the imported characters that I don't need to be familiar with the canon they're from.)

The Adventures of Ledo and Ix

Characters nominated: Ledo, Ix, Worldbuilding
(Any requested) What I love is the whole thing, see my canon promo: Ledo and Ix Promo As of this, I'm the only one to have written it, so please go wild with your own ideas and don't feel bound by my prompts.

Some prompts should you care to try them:
Prompts:
- What do you think would have happened in the second season if the kickstarter-added character hadn't sort of taken over?
- Do Ledo and Ix ever get a real answer to whether the Princess can talk/think/feel/pass a Turing test?
- Are Ledo and Ix people, or AIs, or does that question even make sense? Is the answer the same for them both or different for each of them? What if Ledo is an AI and Ix is a player interacting with her and trying to figure out how she became self-aware? What if Ledo is a person who was embedded into the game world because of (physical or psychological) damage and Ix is an AI trying to help her? Or what if it's some other sort of thing like those that you come up with...
- What's with the brain fungus? Did everyone in the world used to be a person and then brain fungus got them?
- What if one of the monsters started talking to Ledo or Ix like a person? What would they do?

Biting the Sun

Character: Worldbuilding
Feel free to use any canon characters, and to create original ones as needed. I loved this canon when I read it, which I did out of order (already a Tanith Lee fan in my teens, I found a used copy of Drinking Sapphire Wine and read that well before I found the previous book).

What I like about this canon: I love the wild setting with the desert and the six and eight legged alien creatures (the white-furred pet Thunder-Flower, the splay foots, the Grey Eyes), intermixed with the regular ones (swans, cats, etc) and the mythical ones as well (lots of dragons, for example). What if the whole thing is set on some alien, partiallty-terraformed planet and some of the creatures are native to that place? Or alternatively, what if everything odd is a result of genetic engineering and body-creation that's been let to go feral? What if there's a whole parallel society of aliens there, since many of these creatures seem fully intelligent even if much lower technology than the Fours?

Also, the paternalistic AI Committee and their prescriptions for their humans. In particular, the seamless gender fluidity that nearly everyone exhibits contrasts to the incomprehension of anything but heterosexuality by the narrator and other Jang: if two people currently in female human bodies feel attraction, their only thought is one of them should become male. How interesting of a setup, what potential transgressions might occur to a 21st century reader's enjoyment! What would happen if two Jang girls like Nilla and Felain had love (which they clearly do in exile in the end, but what if in the Fours)? Or two Jang boys? What about Older People, do they ever, given their less structured sexual practices... do the narrator's makers have love with each other when they're both male as they typically are at the start of the book, but keep it from the narrator because it would scandalize her?

Where do the narrator's random knowledge of mostly-unheard-of things like God and perverts and adventure-novel-plot-structure come from (in an in-world sense, rather than 'they just come from the author') - does she have a memory of a previous life in our time perhaps? It often seems that way. If you've read Silver Metal Lover the author pulls that sort of premise in sometimes and perhaps the Fours world is a distant future of the Silver Metal Lover world, when they'd just started making androids...

The Endless

Characters nominated: Hal, Tim, Entity, Worldbuilding.
What I requested: Worldbuilding

What I like about this movie, and some prompts: Cults formed around alien presences. Narratives that intersect in concentric interlocking rings. Time loops. Time loops!

10 seconds, 10 minutes, 10 hours, 10 days, 10 weeks, 10 years... however long a time loop is, it goes around again. Is there any escape?

Please feel free to use any canon characters, nominated or not, in this request. I consider worldbuilding to be very broad, and any filling-in of back story of how some particular situation portrayed in the movie came about would count, as well as detail as to how it connects up with other movies that may or may not be related, and also, who knows what's going on? How do they know? What do they do with the knowledge?

Are there other entities or just the one? What else has it done/can it do...

What other places, people, and stories might be involved, even...

Lock In series

Characters nominated: Chris Shane, Leslie Vann, Worldbuilding
My request: Worldbuilding
Feel free to use either or both of the nominated characters, or any other canon characters, or to create original characters as needed for the worldbuilding story.

It's so interesting how the world changed following the epidemic of the lock in syndrome. The books explore some of it. What else might have changed? What is mostly the same but then there's a difference because there's the nonorganic proxy bodies of some participants...

Piranesi

Characters nominated: Angharad Scott, The Other | Valentine Ketterley, James Ritter, Piranesi | Matthew Rose Sorensen, Sixteen | Sarah Raphael, Worldbuilding
What I requested: Sarah Raphael

Feel free to use the other nominated characters and to use other canonical characters and invent original characters as needed. I am not especially interested in Ritter, but I'd be very interested in a story focusing on any of the other nominated characters - Sarah can appear in a more minor role if you do that, and it would be fine.

I would really love to know more about the world setting too, but I don't want to make it seem like I need worldbuilding in the story because I'd also be very happy with a story about Sarah in a world indistinguishable from the real world, as she goes about solving a mystery or figuring out the very weird goings on as she did.

Prompts:
- Sarah investigates
- Sarah explores the House, with or without company of another character

The Silt Verses

No characters nominated

I really enjoyed listening to this podcast and would love fic for it. Spin off a minor character's story or tell me something set before or after the canon.

No characters were nominated for this canon, so feel free to use any canon characters and to create original ones as needed.

I am interested in all the characters in the story and also in the world setting. The whole concept is so interesting to me, with the deities so easily created by almost any beliefs at all, and so dangerous.

Prompts:
- has anyone developed a practice of purposeful nonbelief so as to avoid the whole deity issue? Are they "atheists"?
- More on the whole radio host sponsored by the caffeine deity thing, and what came before that?
- Did the Trawler-man faith start up as a loose organization of people with similar river-based beliefs and get organized? Or did someone start it on purpose and recruit/proselytize?
- Something with Paige set before the canon would be interesting. Maybe her hobbies, or stuff about her education and when she applied for her job?
- Something with Carpenter before the canon would also be good. She seems to have had a complicated past. Maybe she had a close call before that would make a good story?

Overview: Ledo and Ix

Ledo and Ix is an unfinished animated series about two (maybe the only two) self-aware, thinking characters living in a pixel-art game world.

The two of them go through some emotional and existential adventures, as well as funny ones. The distinction is sometimes lost entirely.

If you like video game humor and also unexpected depth of the pathos of not-quite-solipsistic existence in an arbitrary world - and can handle the fact that it just peters out in the middle of an arc in season 2 with a half-made episode - this is the canon for you.

Screenshots from Episode 2

Characters

Ledo

Ledo is a tough, high level warrior who finds even the scariest-looking random encounter monsters no trouble at all. She's laconic and a bit too ready to consume alcoholic beverages. Very genre-savvy, but frustrated at the lack of flexibility exhibited by most of the inhabitants of her world. Her only real friend is Ix.

Ix

Ix is a naturally optimistic easy-going bard type who wants the world to be better than it is. Ledo is the only person he's found who has the same sort of ability to speculate and solve problems that he has, but he keeps hoping they'll find more like themselves.

What I want: worldbuilding. Every worldbuilding thing. I requested Worldbuilding tag in every fandom and only that; feel free to have background ships do whatever you want, in most fandoms I don't even have any ship DNWs, as long as there's a good amount of worldbuilding around the ship(s)!

LIKES:

Character, setting, and theme likes: cats (including cat-like fantasy creatures or spirits), aliens (including cat-like and human-like aliens as well as ones like nothing at all on Earth), friendship, rivalry, enemies, eerie supernatural stuff, unusual settings, ancient history (BCE), science fiction, technology, AI, robots, cyborgs, worldbuilding. Smut likes: Older human characters having explicit sex. Saying with physical affection what they can't say out loud. Solving problems in sex (difficulty climaxing, premature ejaculation, injury does not allow for their usual sex, that kind of thing). For all writing-style options, go with whatever best suits your personal style or your chosen story.

The Endless
Any ship or character is fine in my gift(s) as long as there's has substantial worldbuilding inside. Any of the nominated characters or relationships, or any not nominated too.

This movie has such an interesting take on time loops! And also what the heck is going on with the (alien?) that's causing them? Is it metafictional, I think it might be... give me *your* idea though!

prompts (or go with your own idea if you have one!)
- a loop that wasn't shown in the movie
- someone escapes a loop - how?
- someone thinks they have figured out how to escape a loop - is wrong
- crossover or fusion with another time loop canon like - Palm Springs, Russian Doll, Groundhog Day, Day Break (TV 2006)
- write me siblingcest for this canon if you want 😁

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters, serious harm to pets.

The Outside

Any ship or character is fine in my gift(s) as long as there's has substantial worldbuilding in there. Any of the nominated characters or relationships works.

This book is really interesting, full of original created human cultures, aliens, cyborgs, AIs, and extradimensional horror! I haven't read the sequel yet, I think it's coming out soon? or just came out? anyway feel free to spoil it, and equally feel free not to read it, either way is fine. I'd love *your* ideas on what comes next or the untold back stories.

More optional prompts -
- Something about the cyborg angels of your choice of AI god
- Something about a planet and how it reacts to the Outside infection
- Something about Evianna and her discoveries, or someone else who did that kind of research and had that kind of issue as a result
- Something about the aliens (either kind, the kind with living ships, or the translator ones)
- I totally ship Elu/Akavi with - unrequited pining by Elu, noncon, yandere, stockholm, eventual trust building. as dark or soft as you want to go with them; Elu/Enga also has good potential
- the canon couple Tiv/Yasira is great and they can work it out or not (I'm fine to see them broken up, or struggling with separation, as well as happy together!); Yasira/Evianna has a lot of potential too; they could both appear in the same story too for some conflict

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters, deliberate harm to pets.

The Goblin Emperor

Any characters from canon (both original book and Witness for the Dead, which I have read) are fine in my gift(s) as long as there's has substantial worldbuilding in there. Any of the nominated characters is fine, as are any characters that aren't nominated. Any & ship is totally fine. For / ships, see my DNW below. Any / ship that doesn't violate these DNWs is fine (they're both adults, unrelated, and not Maia). I'm equally happy with m/m, f/f, m/f, and nonbinary shipping.

My fic for TGE is here: https://archiveofourown.org/users/Gammarad/works?fandom_id=62322985

Prompts (optional - please write your own idea if you have one that doesn't match!)
- opera stuff! Whether in Cetho or Amalo or elsewhere. What if Min Vechin was performing in Amalo, she'd be at the fanciest opera house, but maybe Iana and Thara would want to see her show? Or an in-universe program for an opera? or a director's notes, or told from the viewpoint of a lights tech, or a child with a bit part?
- clockwork stuff. Diagrams for mechanisms, a story set in a university or trade guild about an apprentice, maybe details about the extraordinary clock Maia got? Someone in the Alcethmeret knows the person who made it maybe...
- family issues. For example, the situation Stano Bazhevin got in, where she was engaged but never married; what about a woman in the same situation who, after being not-quite-widowed, wants to marry (remarry?) Is there a process? how about widows remarrying, does it happen, if so what is the complication? Alternatively, it's been said that on rare occasions men marry into their wives' family, what would that be like? Or adoption. Or differences between family arrangements in various places in the world
- Things about the barely-there countries other than the main elf and goblin ones. A story set entirely elsewhere in the world.

DNW: any / ship involving underage characters (future fic for child characters is fine though to include / ships that only start once they're adults; also, there's canonically engagements for some underage characters - mentioning that kind of thing happening in a similar way to how it's mentioned in the canon is fine). Any / ship involving parent/child or sibling/sibling incest. Any / ship with Maia other than Maia/Csethiro. Also: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters, deliberate harm to pets.

To the Moon

Any ship or character is fine in my gift(s) as long as there's has substantial worldbuilding in there. Any of the nominated characters or relationships works.

I love the weird memory stuff that happens in these games. I'm sure there are a lot of creative things you can do to write a fic or make another kind of work based on them!

my one fic for this fandom is here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/27732802 for consent issues last year.

Totally optional prompts (I will love your ideas for me as much as my own)
- Eva and Neil helping a new person out and/or trying to but messing it up and/or dealing with bureaucratic stuff when trying to help a person and/or inventing a new useful (or wacky, or dangerous) technique!
- Anything with Faye! What's she up to on her own during Colin's lifetime? What happens to her after he dies? How much is she Colin, how much a bird, how much something (what) else?

I'm attempting to ask for 'any interactive fiction' but haven't figured out what opt in that is.

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters, serious harm to pets, incest involving underage characters.

The Pretender

Any ship or character is fine in my gift(s) as long as there's has substantial worldbuilding in there. Any of the nominated characters or relationships works.

The whole concept of this show was so interesting to me back when I was watching it on broadcast TV, and honestly I haven't lost interest in it that much, though I don't really enjoy re-watching it (it's pretty dated I guess), I do like thinking about it and reading fic a lot. And I was so into it back then, I never missed an episode, so it's very nostalgia-fandom for me. I will love anything you come up with.

Prompts (entirely optional, go wherever you want in this world)
- the Centre before Jarod and Parker were even born
- what else the Centre is doing that was never shown in the show
- Other organizations or individuals that figured out how to do the same things the show portrayed that are impossible in reality, and how they tried to keep those secret or how they tried to exploit those powers
- alternative explanations for things that happened in the show, as if those things were secrets that the show never got around to revealing
- ways people who escaped from the Centre found to keep themselves safe, or alternatively to take advantage of what they knew that those around them did not
- hidden "mistakes" made by secret societies

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, descriptions of injuries that mention exposed bone, explicit underage sex.

Beware of the Villainess

There's all sorts of options in world building - the magic system? how did the werewolves get like that? what other sorts of supernatural creatures exist there? The economics and / or legal system? The novel's "system" that talks to Yuri? Yona's secret life? I want to know all about all of those. Or anything else! Any ship can be in there, in the background, use any characters. (My favorites are Melissa, Nine, Yuri, and Yona, but I also like Jack, Ian, Jake, etc...)

optional prompts (use as you like, or feel free to ignore entirely!)
- more about the werewolf society. and/or alternate societies for *women* who shapeshift, maybe?
- the system that runs the novel, how does it work? what even is it? how does it achieve what it achieves, and/or why is it letting Melissa do what she's doing?
- the mechanism of transmigration. How was the person chosen who became Melissa? Is there a chance of another person entering another character, and if so what happens when Melissa finds out (or anyone else does)?
- what if Yona discovers something about the world that wasn't previously known (and isn't in the canon). would she tell anyone? or just take advantage of the knowledge herself in secret

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters, serious harm to pets.

The Hollow

The weird and interesting world building possible here includes both the 'real' world and the virtual ones shown, and new virtual ones that you might make up that would fit the setting.

I'm happy to see any characters and any ships in the story, or none, as long as the focus is on building out the world.

Any type of interactive fiction is fine with me.

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters, (blood relative) incest involving underage characters (this would not apply to virtual characters if it's clear they're virtual), serious harm to pets.

Lost Boys

Vampire worldbuilding maybe is one of my favorite types of worldbuilding. How many vampires are there in the world setting - is this the only town that has "all the damn vampires" or are there other vampire towns? Where do the master vampires come from and is it other vampires too, or are they created some other way (even self created)? Do Lost Boys vampires have the counting compulsion? What is the deal with half vampires and do they age normally? Etc. Go wild.

I just found out there were sequel movies - I had no idea. So, use worldbuilding stuff from the sequels or not, and don't worry if you haven't seen them. Requested based on original movie only, but don't mind spoilers for them as I will probably never see them? Sorry if this is a bad idea, as I said I didn't know until (after signups closed) about it...

Feel free to use any characters, and any ships that don't go against my DNWs below.

DNW: bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation or gender, injuries involving exposed bone, explicit underage sex, noncon involving underage characters (very brief mentions ok in this fandom), (blood relative) incest involving underage characters, serious harm to pets.
I'm Gammarad on ao3. I love all my requests equally! Fill any one you want. I'm open to 10k+ single work or two 5k works or comics of either length equivalent.

Fandoms for Five Figure Fanfic Exchange

Fandom anchor links (alphabeticalish):

Not fandom specific:

If making a comic, feel free to do a scene from a larger story that's implied by the scene in some way, too. I like art that's atmospheric and conveys the emotions of the story, and in comics, more stylized usually works better for me than more realistic, so maybe a limited palette of colors would be good, or drawings that aren't colored.

LIKES:

Character, setting, and theme likes: cats (including cat-like fantasy creatures or spirits), aliens (including cat-like and human-like aliens as well as ones like nothing at all on Earth), friendship, rivalry, enemies, eerie supernatural stuff, unusual settings, ancient history (BCE), science fiction, technology, AI, robots, cyborgs, worldbuilding. Older mature characters.

Gen (& relationship) likes: Loyalty - either one way or mutual, enemies who have a certain understanding, colleagues who rely on each other, colleagues who undermine each other, employee & employer relatioship either with loyalty or with one using the other, parent & child relationships with protectiveness, student & teacher relationships with mutual desire to learn, criminal & victim relationships with complexities, bounty hunter & target relationships where they have to be taken alive (or where the target is just that hard to kill), stranger & potential new friend (but also potential new threat) relationships, allies of convenience.

Cats of Grand Central

  • Arhu & Siffha'h

  • Rhiow

  • Urruah

  • Original Cat Wizard

  • Worldbuilding

Prompts (feel free to use or ignore in favor of going with my likes list from above):
- Portals go haywire in new and interesting ways, cat wizards are the portal specialists and must fix
- rivalry causes big trouble between cat wizards but no one will step in, they have to resolve it themselves
- someone tries to coopt a cat wizard - they partially succeed and then what?
- cat wizards vs aliens - must keep aliens a secret from the non-wizard humans, but maybe other cats can help!
- cat wizards vs well-meaning humans who have entirely the wrong idea about cat wizards in some humorous or touching way
- a rogue wizard (cat or other type) causes problems for the main character(s) yet shows them a (seemingly unrelated) problem they might otherwise never have noticed
- rescuing kittens from trouble (maybe a litter of kittens were born with wings for no apparent reason? maybe the kittens have been trying to reunite with their mother but she's in another dimension? maybe the kittens were stolen because they're valuable and when rescued, there's also a whole lot of exotic animals that need help?)

DNW: gory descriptions of injuries, injuries with exposed bone, any explicit sex between cats, focus on romance between humans, focus on romance between spayed or neutered cats, focus on cats in heat or intact tomcats' obsession with sex

The City & the City

  • Tyador BorlĆŗ/Original Character

  • Tyador BorlĆŗ

  • Lizbyet Corwi

  • Original Undercover Breach Agent

  • Worldbuilding

Prompts (feel free to use or ignore in favor of going with my likes list from above):
- someone from Breach is murdered. Guess who ends up helping solve the case?
- a threat is made against a Beszel official visiting Ul Qoma (or vice versa) - they may need protection. Who made the threat, why, and will they carry it out? Or was it a ruse?
- a formerly completely ordinary, regular Ul Qoman citizen goes rogue, hiding out in Beszel without officially crossing into it, and somehow manages to escape Breach. What's going on?
- secret Breach documents are released by an angry (or drugged, or other reason) Breach agent and Breach has the main character help out
- a mysterious thieves' guild building appears in Beszel one day (or in Ul Qoma), and it's rumored they've always been there - only in Orciny, so neither city ever saw it before
- Tyador can end up in a romantic relationship with a person from any of the above prompts or come up with your own?

DNW: explicit underage sex, noncon incest, bulging or inflation kink, injuries with exposed bone, focus on incest or underage ships

Chronicles of Amber

  • Dalt

  • Dara

  • Ghostwheel

Prompts (feel free to use or ignore in favor of going with my likes list from above):
- Dalt has a grudge to work out against one of his relatives; another relative becomes an ally
- Dara has to maneuver around her Courts of Chaos relatives to pursue an Amber-related goal
- Ghostwheel takes an unconventional route to getting to know more about his family (either or both sides)
- a cross Shadow war of some kind involves one of the three characters despite their not wanting to be involved in something so trivial. Yet apparently there's something deeper going on (Amberite or Chaos involvement?)
- Dalt + original character or canon character of author's choice have a romance, with political intrigue background
- Dara + original character or canon character of author's choice have a romance, with occult intrigue background
- Ghostwheel somehow has romance - how does that even work? I'd love someone to show me...

DNW: underage sex, permanent death of requested characters, bulging or inflation kink, injuries with exposed bone

Much Ado About Nothing

  • Don John

Prompts (feel free to use or ignore in favor of going with my likes list from above):
- Don John is broken out of detention or escapes. Story could go into the escape plan, or follow the aftermath
- Don John has a romantic liaison with an unrelated character of author's choice, it is complicated
- canon divergence where Don John's plan was more successful - then what?
- canon divergence where Don John's plan still failed but instead of being caught, he's a fugitive. This can be combined with a romance, too, for more fun and subplot shenanigans.

Feel free to have any background ships from the canon included in the story, as long as a good portion of the focus is on the requested character. Canon ships or your choice of ships are all fine, any gender combinations, as long as they don't violate my DNWs.

DNW: incest (between blood-related family members closer than 1st cousins), focus on underage sex, bulging or inflation kink, 'corrective' noncon of any orientation, injuries with exposed bone

Original Works

Spy with So Many Secrets and Identities Uncertain What Is Real/Another Spy
Spy with So Many Secrets and Identities Uncertain What Is Real/Handler
Male Combat Cyborg/Female Robotics Engineer From Rival Syndicate
Male Combat Cyborg/Male Robotics Engineer From Rival Syndicate
Mid-Century Librarian/Crash-Landed Alien Posing as Human

Any gender combination is fine if not indicated in the tag: I like all the categories. Also feel free to go with any gender identity details you have in mind for the characters. Unusual sexual equipment is also fine. Go wild however you want to write the sci-fi sex and/or romance, or keep it pretty close to regular human (which also has a pretty wild variety!)

Also I love worldbuilding. Feel free to focus on the ship, or to go wild on the worldbuilding, I will love it either way.

What I like about spies: the tension of wanting to tell things to a person you care about with needing to lie to them for survival or for the mission. Competence, secrecy, the situations that come up when one person knows something and the other doesn't. The way situations change depending on how you look at them, how a disaster can turn into a triumph and vice versa. Having to decide between doing: what's right, what will keep your morality or sanity, what will protect the people you care for, and what the mission demands.

What I like about cyborgs: The gain in power combined with the loss of previous parts of the self; how it changes the person's relationship and identity; cool things cyborgs can do that regular people can't; new sensations from the machinery hooked up to the brain; having to do maintenance on their body instead of it being able to heal itself; how it might be viewed as intimate vs viewed as impersonal when it's tending body parts that are also machines, by different people in the same situation.

What I like about aliens: how they view the world from an outsider perspective; how they have their own culture that is made up and can reflect reality or options that reality hasn't made yet; their ability to find both problems and solutions that humans haven't found yet. The contrast of different bodies and minds and histories raised to an even greater level than between two very different humans.

DNW for this request: any underage sex or romance, violent or threat-based noncon of female characters by male characters (dubious consent due to factors other than threats or violence is fine in m/f ships and all types are fine in other ship categories), "corrective" noncon of any orientation, serious and permanent harm to pets or children (or plausible threat against pets or children used to coerce), bulging or inflation kink, injuries involving exposed bone.

Piranesi

  • Sarah Raphael

  • Original Character & The House

What I am interested in about Piranesi: The characters of Sarah, Piranesi, all the minor characters who show up; the birds and why there are birds in the House at all; the statues; how the memory loss works; what life is like for others who start to live there and how it's similar and different to Piranesi's experience. The magic process that gets a person to the House and all the different ways it could work. The mystic group that Matthew was investigating and each person in it.

Please feel free to use any of these prompts, or ignore them and consult my likes list for more options!

- Back story on Sarah and how she came to be the sort of person who'd go looking for a missing person in the House (and succeed!)
- Future story about Sarah and what her life is like after the discovery. Does she stay long enough to have her memory affected? Does she take anyone else there? What does the House want with her, if anything?
- An original character who enters the House. How do they get there? What leads them there?
- Or alternatively, also for original character, what happens to them in the House? Do they die there? If they die, what happens to their remains? If they don't die, do they ever leave? How and what happens afterward?
- Or alternatively for either Sarah or an original character: What is their relationship like with the House if they visit but never stay long? What does it change for them about their view of the regular world?

DNW for this request: explicit sex, incest, underage characters involved in romance with adults or in nonconsensual sex, injuries with exposed bone, severe harm to pets or focus on threats to pets or children, death of Sarah Raphael (it's okay to kill off original characters or unrequested characters).

Teixcalaan series

  • Five Agate/Nineteen Adze

  • Twenty Cicada

Prompts (feel free to use or ignore in favor of going with my likes list from above):
- Twenty Cicada and the kitten he somewhat-adopted and the progress of their relationship
- Twenty Cicada and the aliens and how he deals with their interactions (and how they deal with him! Alien POV would be cool too) ; you can include alien sex (heats, weird genitals, what the aliens even do for sex, whether solely with each other or experimentally also with Twenty Cicada?) if you want to go there, that could be very interesting, or stick with communication and negotiations and military and all that stuff
- What if Twenty Cicada took the kitten to meet with the aliens? what if that worked out really well?
- Twenty Cicada's job on the ship and how he does it (and makes life easier for his friend the captain, or not)
- Twenty Cicada's relationship with his unusual religion; worldbuilding about his religion and home culture and so on
- Nineteen Adze and Five Agate always had a romantic relationship of a sort, but it used to be back burnered as Nineteen Adze had to focus on the Emperor (and Yksandr? maybe), but now those are both gone
- Nineteen Adze and Five Agate start up a relationshp when Five Agate becomes an ezuazuacat - how does it start? how does it proceed? does Nineteen Adze feel like she's recreating something, or starting something entirely new?
- Empire ruling detail worldbuilding with background Nineteen Adze/Five Agate is also exceptionally welcome

DNWs: sexual or romantic relationships between minors and adults; focus on sex or romance between minors; bulging or inflation kink; death of requested characters; injuries involving exposed bone

The Witness for the Dead

  • Amiru Chonhadrin & her grandfather Thilmerezh

  • Group: Amiru Chonhadrin/Lalo Leverin

  • Othoro Vakrezharad

Prompts (feel free to use or ignore in favor of going with my likes list from above):
- how Othoro became an opera singer
- rehearsing the operas, what they're like from Othoro's point of view, her interactions with the other opera singers and staff
- Othoro's personal relationships, family, romantic interests, or something else about her life
- Amiru's family, her hobbies, her everyday life, events at the factory she works in
- Amiru and her grandfather Thilmerezh end up having more in common than they expect and then there's trouble from Amiru's other relatives over that
- Amiru and Lalo meet (maybe Thara introduces them) and get on well enough that a romance starts
- Maybe there's Thara solving murders in the background? but that's not necessary. or maybe someone else from TGE shows up?

DNW: injuries with exposed bone, incest, explicit noncon, focus on sex or romance involving underage character(s).

Dislikes - these are general DNWs that I have that may not apply in all cases - please be aware that request-specific DNWs from signup always trump this list:
-- face claims of real people for original characters (Drawings you made are wonderful and very welcome!)
-- incest (defined as *actual family members* closer than first cousins. Does not apply to 'like a brother' or 'childhood friends' or anything like that). Exception: immortal beings (example: Greek gods), in adult form.
-- explicit underage sex (sometimes exceptions for sex between two teens 16 and over, when requested).
-- noncon of underage victims
-- bulging or inflation kink
-- injury that includes exposed bone
-- serious injury or death of cats or cat-like creatures (exception: ghost cats are fine, and showing how they die and become ghosts is fine; it's also fine when a cat is a requested character and the scenario involves hurt/comfort for the cat)
-- "corrective" noncon of a person of any orientation; victims of noncon or dubcon stating that aggressor is of gender they aren't attracted to
-- feminization of one part of m/m pairing to make it more like het; masculinization of one part of f/f pairing to make it more like het; any discussion of who is "the girl" or "the man" etc in the ship. People who are gender non-conforming, feminine men, masculine women, butch women, etc, are all fine if it doesn't fall into that sort of thing. Exception for it happening canonically.

Prompts:

Time travel to fix something in the past results in visit to other canon
Time travel that forms a static looping - between canons
Rescuing a canon character or multiple canon characters from a non-canon peril
Rescuing a canon character or multiple canon characters from canonical peril
Attempting to rescue canon character and interfering with canonical rescue process
Canon-typical case/mission fic (but with the other canon playing a role)
Slice of life interrupted by sudden dimensional door to/from other canon
Romance between characters from different canons
Merge two canons and explain how they overlap / coexist
Origin story of a canon character as if they originated in another canon
Exploring a strange place that is supernaturally or sci-fi-ishly weird and surreal
Character from one canon goes into business in another canon to complain about employee
A canon character meets up with characters from another canon and they:
- are instantly in conflict per their respective goals/needs/preferences
- experience culture clash in amusing ways
- misunderstand each other but both think the other(s) are great! they're just *wrong*
- can't speak each other's language and try to figure out how to communicate
- instantly know the answer to the other side's thorniest problem - now what?
- ought to kill them immediately but don't for *reasons*
Show one side's idea of what's happening, then tell it from the other side's viewpoint and it's almost totally different
Amnesia, one canon character has forgotten they always knew the other canon existed
Character from one canon stalks character from other canon
Characters from different canon are exes; never thought they'd meet again

I'm Gammarad on ao3. I love all my requests equally! Fill any one you want. (Requests at the bottom, copied from the form entries pretty much verbatim.)

Reallly, go with whatever best suits your personal style or your chosen story.

General DNWs (may not apply in all cases - please go by request specific DNWs):
-- face claims of real people for original characters (Drawings you made are wonderful and very welcome!)
-- incest (defined as *actual family members* closer than first cousins. Does not apply to 'like a brother' or 'childhood friends' or anything like that). Exception: immortal beings (example: Greek gods), in adult form.
-- explicit underage sex (sometimes exceptions for two teens in the 16-18 range, when requested).

Requests:

SWTOR

Cytharat/Male Imperial Agent | Cipher Nine & Baby (SWTOR)
Cytharat/Male Sith Warrior & Baby (SWTOR)
Cytharat/Male Sith Inquisitor & Baby (SWTOR)

Fic-Character

Foundling baby taken in by unlikely parents
Accidentally Ending Up with a Baby Clone Version of Yourself
All babies the result of nonsexual magic; characters go on quest to find baby
Character A questions Character B's ability to care for a baby
All babies the result of nonsexual magic; elaborate fake rituals to hide/protect real quest/ritual
Discovering Abandoned Alien Child
Incubating a Found or Stolen Egg
Accidentally Ending Up with a Baby Clone Version of Your Parent
Character on parental leave is SO BORED and keeps sneaking into work

DNW: permanent death of requested characters; underage sex; explicit sex between unrequested characters

I'd love a story about finding a baby or egg and figuring out what to do with it; a story about the complicated process of getting a baby that doesn't involve pregnancy; a story about how much a clone resembles or doesn't resemble the original; a story about avoiding baby care by being very busy with an important job -- and how well or badly that works; a story about who's better at child care and why; or anything else you feel inspired to write for me about these characters.

Pregnant Male Sith Warrior & Creator's Choice of Alliance Member(s) (SWTOR)
Pregnant Male Outlander & Lana Beniko (SWTOR)

Fic-Character

Secret pregnancy
Character wakes up pregnant and they don’t know how it happened
Fetus has magical powers and pregnant parent can use them during gestation
Everyone is trying to give pregnant character advice; pregnant character HATES it
Heteropaternal superfecundation: pregnant with multiples but each baby has a different parent
Star Wars: Sometimes The Force Just Impregnates People And This Is Normal
Interspecies pregnancy has unusual side effects

DNW: permanent death of requested characters; underage sex; sibling or parent-child incest

These give you a lot of choices as to who to write about! The Sith Warrior or Outlander's reason for having their pregnancy be secret could be anything from security or status based, to personal or relationship reasons. Wakes up pregnant not knowing how it happened, the story could be about how it happened, or can be combined with the Force just does this sometimes and the story is about the interspecies-caused unusual side effects, or the bad (or good-but-unwanted!) advice and how to stop it or get used to it, or the "magical" powers the fetus is granting. Feel free to write about just one of the freeforms or combine a couple that seem to fit together.

I love all the player characters and companion characters in this game. You can also choose a character of your choice to be the other parent, or leave that mysterious.

WandaVision

Wanda Maximoff/Pregnant Vision (WandaVision)
Pregnant Wanda Maximoff/Vision (WandaVision)

Fic-Character

Transferring Unborn Baby from Pregnant Parent to Partner
forced separation from newborn baby or pregnant partner
Pregnant character impregnating their partner
Getting Pregnant is Step for Magical Ritual
Impregnated By A Magical Accident

DNW for this request: noncon; explicit sex; sibling or parent/child incest

Ideas/suggestions/prompts: weird magic different from canon weird magic; weird magic like canon weird magic; canon sitcom AUs; alternate sitcom AUs with magic added; like canon but with extra pregnancy; escaping from SWORD together, possibly getting separated in the process; one escapes and the other does not -- rescue attempt ensues; details/worldbuilding/crack-taken-seriously on how Wanda got pregnant in canon, since it was skipped over; Vision got pregnant instead of Wanda, how did that change things?

Pregnant Darcy Lewis/Monica Rambeau/Jimmy Woo (WandaVision)
Darcy Lewis/Pregnant Monica Rambeau/Jimmy Woo (WandaVision)
Darcy Lewis/Monica Rambeau/Pregnant Jimmy Woo (WandaVision)

Fic-Character

Reality Warper Wants Babies; Everyone Who Comes Into Contact Gets Pregnant
Wild Scifi pregnancy complications
Other characters try to keep pregnant character from doing canon-typical perilous activity
Baby Conceived While Parents Were Trapped in a Bunker
A/B/O: omega is pregnant at work/in the field

DNW: parent/child or sibling incest; underage sex

I love the idea of these three characters having a relationship -- arrange it any way you like (poly triad, V any direction, still nebulous and tentative, FWBs, it was just that one time in that bunker -- any way works!)

Ideas/prompts/suggestions: What if watching Wanda's pregnancy show caused pregnancy in Darcy or Jimmy? What if being with her before or during Wanda's pregnancy caused Monica's? What kind of weird pregnancy complications might happen due to the Hex? How dangerous is what they were doing and should they stop while pregnant? What if they were trapped together for a day or three and it sparked feelings / or they were trapped *and influenced* by a sex-pollen-like spell or effect, and that led to pregnancy?

Note: if you want to go with the omegaverse freeform, one of each would be nice, or two omegas is okay, or two alphas, or two betas, could all work? your choice which is alpha, which beta, and which omega - make whichever one is pregnant an omega, and if two are pregnant the other pregnant one can be alpha or beta even. How omegaverse dynamics affect the setting could be explored in detail or just skimmed over.

Beware of the Villainess

Pregnant Nine Forton/Melissa Podebrat/Yuri Elizabeth (BotV)

Fic-Character

Male character in M/F or M/F/F relationship volunteers to be the one impregnanted
Surrogate pines for couple whose baby they're carrying
Helping and caring for pregnant love interest leads to get together
Feral Behavior During Labor/Birth

DNW: Peacock (at all); noncon between requested characters (past noncon with other characters is fine); underage sex

Ideas/prompts/suggestions: What if Melissa/Yuri is established and Nine wants to carry their baby for Reasons (to protect them both probably) and that leads to them getting together with him -- or they're established and Nine just shows up pregnant one day, perhaps by another werewolf, and caring for him leads to getting together? What if they're already all together and after Nine's impregnated, he becomes more feral - they might worry it was a mistake to let him?

Male Hacker/pregnant Male Android With Artificial Womb (Original Work)
Male Alien Bar Owner/pregnant Male Human Mercenary (Original Work)
pregnant Male Alien Bar Owner/Male Human Mercenary (Original Work)

A previously had a falling out with B; complicated emotions ensue when A learns B is pregnant
Celebrate Conquest of Earth With Conceiving Baby
Helping give birth in a non-hospital setting
Robot/Human Hybrid Children
Hybrid Pregnancy - It's Unknown What Ways The Baby Will Resemble Either Parent

DNW: underage warning; parent/child or sibling incest; faceclaims of real people (even links).

I love sci fi so much that I think anything you do with these pairings and freeforms would be great. More ideas later if I think of them?

See general likes above!

Female Vampire/Pregnant Female Vampire Hunter (Original Work)
Female Psychic/Her Wife Pregnant With Ghost Baby Seeking Reincarnation (Original Work)

Fic-Character

Pregnancy Through Demonic Possession
Finding a Way Around Supernatural Laws to Have Baby
All babies the result of nonsexual magic; heir is whoever can be impregnated by the family ritual
Pregnancy as a side effect of a Healing/Resurrection Spell (Target Pregnant)
A previously had a falling out with B; complicated emotions ensue when A learns B is pregnant

DNW: underage sex; blood relative incest; medieval setting; faceclaims of real people (even links).

Suggestions/prompts/ideas: urban fantasy setting would be great, or futuristic even; historical time period modeled after either renaissance or more recent history, or ancient world, would also be wonderful. A secondary-world fantasy setting based on any of those would be lovely, I adore worldbuilding.

How did the pregnant character get pregnant? Do they know, or is it mysterious and they need to find out for reasons? What supernatural laws apply to pregnancies? How did the ghost baby do it, was the pregnancy a side effect or the intended goal of the magic? How do vampires work in this setting and can they make people pregnant, or did the pregnancy happen and then the vampire hunter needed help? There's so many possibilities with these magic-supernatural-related freeforms.

If you go with the 'previously had a falling out' freeform -- The falling out could be about money, about different magic styles, a disagreement about a third party (who got killed, maybe by one of them? or who came between the partners romantically?) Maybe one of the partners cheated. Maybe they told a secret they weren't supposed to. Maybe they fell out because of arguments over having children? The psychic and woman pregnant-with-ghost-baby are married, but maybe it's a trial separation or something before the pregnancy is discovered.
note: if you feel like combining 2 or even 3 ship tags, go for it.

Prompts for alien ships, or maybe it's just free-associating about what might give you a story I'd love (feel free to ignore in favor of a story inspired by the ship tag and my likes instead!):

Misunderstandings between aliens and humans abound. Sometimes they're both right, even though they think they can't possibly both be right, because things seem so different from the human vs alien perspective. If they've just met, they're drawn together by curiosity or a need for affection and seeing something in each other that they realize they need.

Silly problems with baby or young aliens or young humans or gestating hybrids - bringing about a truce or setting off new conflicts. Strange language issues and translation errors that are either funny or fix things unexpectedly or cause disasters that, in solving, work things out better than they could have without the disaster.

History between the alien and human partners that needs to be resolved. Maybe there was a war and they fought on the same side but now things are tense. Or maybe they fought on opposite sides, but now there's peace. Maybe one of them's focused on work (farming, bartending, etc) and the other gets in the way? Needs something that causes issues with the job? And a choice has to be made.

Cats and cute fluffy young aliens and children with telescopes can have sad back stories or just be mischievous; might not have anyone left to take care of them. Trying to return them or fix their lack of support or family? Conflict over official rules about adopting aliens?

I'm very stumped for prompts this week, I'm also very open to anything inspired by the ship tags themselves, so I hope the below gives some ideas should you prefer them.

What I like about stories that include AI, robots, androids: I like the perspective on humans from the intelligences we created, so much like us yet aren't us. What is it like to be an AI? What are their experiences and programming that shape their viewpoint and how does that lead to the relationship they have with the humans they meet/know best/love? Can AIs be owned by people and how do they feel about that, is it illegal and if so who pays for their creation and why? When an AI is in a spaceship, the AI can take people places. People live inside the ship and depend on it for their lives. Casefic plots and romance plots equally welcome. What if even an AI doesn't know it's an AI? Or if it's trying to fool people into not knowing it's become self-aware, or (if in a human looking body or projection) not knowing it's not a human? Humans and robots/AIs/androids/spaceships take care of each other or fail to do so in various ways.

In some of these cases, the 'mystery' likes may also be useful. (see below)

I'm extraordinarily into procedural type stories where there's some seeming-unrelated thing the pair is investigating that turns out to spark insight into their relationship or personal problems. Also just fun hijinks investigating mysteries. Doesn't even have to be solved if it helps them figure out something else interesting or personally helpful.

Mysteries involving theft of sentimental objects, insurance fraud, cover-ups of corporate wrongdoing, recovery of historically significant artifacts are all good. There can be urban-fantasy or science-fictional elements in these, too, like AU of modern day but with human-equivalent AI so there's robots or androids around, or with some change to the technology (maybe there's teleporters instead of subways, but phones are all still dumb? maybe there's flying cars and cable television still rules and yet due to data protection rules, instead of streaming, netflix et al still mail CDs? maybe there's all sorts of manned spaceflight and people have started colonies on Mars and there's so much fear of global warming that everyone travels on trains?)

Vampires

  • Gruff Middle-Aged Vampire Hunter Woman/Sophisticated Young-Looking Male Vampire With A Crush (F/M)

  • Space Ship Engineer/Vampire Crewmate (F/F)

  • Vampire/Werewolf that bond over being hunted by the same irritating hunter (M/M)

  • Chef of a Late-Night Bistro/Former Chef-Turned-Vampire (Other)

Immortality and inability to ever see daylight - vampires are naturally angsty even without the whole requirement to drink human blood to keep from going into a coma-like state. Or any sort of vampire take you want to do, I like a wide variety of vampire myth concepts.

Go with a humor approach or a very serious one, or something in between. Vampires with crushes on humans can range from very entitled (of course their human crush is honored to be the object of such feelings and should immediately be swept away with returning the feelings) or they can be very wary (humans often have tried to kill them, at best been wary, they have to take it super slow or maybe even deny the crush altogether) or anything in between. At least they have something in common that helps cross the species boundary, right?

Cats!

  • Pining Neighbor/Pining Neighbor & cat who they both think is theirs

  • Solo: Professional Poker Player Who Has Just Acquired Cat Ears and a Tail

  • Witch in Training & Her Exasperated Magic Cat with Much More Experience (Gen)

This poker player, well, those ears and tail are going to make it much tougher to bluff. They might be in a tournament or just trying to deal with the new parts. It can be a weird occurrence or everyone can think it's a costume or it can be a thing that happens in the setting, however works best. Cat familiars on the other hand are likely to have strong opinions about how things should be done. They are often right, but maybe this once the human knows something the cat does not. On the other hand, the cat might be more subtle and try to help the human while making the human think it's their own idea. Sometimes experienced cats know that with both humans and cats, they're likelier to do it if they don't think it's someone else telling them what to do.

As for cats trying to communicate with aliens or humans that don't have the psychic connection or ability to talk, I'd love to see what work arounds they come up with to achieve their goals. Saving kittens is a great goal. Helping their human companions find love is, too. Getting themselves fed is often a vital immediate goal, while the longer term goal may be helping others find peaceful solutions to problems. Sometimes the cat does it on purpose, sometimes it's a happy accident.

Transmigrations

  • Over-40 Transmigrator & Characters From the Fandom They Love to Hate (Gen)

  • Over-40 Transmigrator & Characters From Their Favorite Fandom (Gen)

  • Writer Transmigrator & Characters From Their Most Famous Series (Gen)

  • Writer Transmigrator & Characters From Their Unpublished Work (Gen)

All sorts of alternate worlds can be transmigrated into. Maybe it's something the person wrote or acted in, maybe it's just something they read or watched, either way they know what's supposed to happen and now they're stuck in it in a way they never expected to be. It'd be great if they find a place in this new setting and a way to fix problems they either didn't know about before, or knew about but didn't think needed solving because they made a good story.

A good story isn't the same thing as a good life. Sometimes they're quite opposite.

I'm fine with romantic or sexual interactions between characters from the setting, but not involving the transmigrator. The transmigrator might help the ships along if they want though? if there's something they ship? And one-sided crushes by characters on the transmigrator are also fine.

Solving the mystery of how they transmigrated might be one approach. Or simply accepting it and figuring out how to live in this world they never expected. Maybe they aren't the only one? maybe there's another person in the same situation who's working against their interests? or who could become a reluctant ally.

There can be a 'system' AI character too, if wanted, but that's not part of the premise necessarily.
- Kado: the right answer
Any or No Characters (Kado)
Original Anisotropic Character(s) (Kado)
Original Character(s) (Kado)
Shinawa Kanata (Kado)
Shindou Yukika (Kado)
WB: Applications of Wam (Kado)
WB: Daily Life in the Anisotropic (Kado)
WB: Half-Human and Half-Anisotropic Existence (Kado)
WB: Humans Exploring the Anisotropic (Kado)
WB: Reactions to Anisotropic Technology outside Japan (Kado)

What I like about this fandom:
The attempt at communication and sharing between aliens and humans, and the way that attempt affects both. The enthusiasm and ingenuity with which the scientists study the new technology. The strangeness of the anisotropic and its technology. Even though it ends with a soft reset, I like to think that first of all, the main human character made it out to the anisotropic, and second, it's still affecting the world, only in subtler ways perhaps.

DNWs: Character bashing, "corrective" noncon, focus on underage sex or romance, cross-generational incest, incest between purely human characters, serious or permanent harm to cats (mentioned/past harm to cats is ok).

WB: Folklore (The City & the City - China Mieville)
WB: Relations with near geographical neighbors (The City & the City - China Mieville)
WB: Urban Infrastructure (The City & the City - China Mieville)

What I like about this fandom:
The strangeness of the setting, and how interesting it is to imagine what it's like to live there. The contrast between the mundanity of the everyday life there and the superstition about Breach or supernatural elements of Breach, and how those could go either way.

DNWs: Character bashing, "corrective" noncon, focus on underage sex or romance, cross-generational incest, incest between purely human characters, serious or permanent harm to cats (mentioned/past harm to cats is ok).

WB: Future of the Zones (Roadside Picnic)
WB: Physical Anomalies in Zone Stalkers And Their Progeny (Roadside Picnic)
WB: Source of the Zones (Roadside Picnic)
WB: Zones Other Than Harmont (Roadside Picnic)

What I like about this canon: The strangeness of the place, the determination of the characters to investigate it and to keep putting themselves deeper in literal and metaphorical debt for what they seem to think is an infinite prize. The way it's strongly implied that the objects don't have the same meaning at all to the aliens who left them behind. The side effects and how little the characters seem to care, but how significant they might be to others in the same world (hence it's ripe for world-building fic).

DNWs: Character bashing, "corrective" noncon, focus on underage sex or romance, cross-generational incest, incest between purely human characters, serious or permanent harm to cats (mentioned/past harm to cats is ok).

Any or No Characters (The Goblin Emperor)

WB: the Athmaz'are (Goblin Emperor)
WB: the Clocksmiths' Guild (Goblin Emperor)
WB: the nation of Pencharn (Goblin Emperor)
WB: Trade and relations between Ethuveraz and Pencharn (Goblin Emperor)

What I like about this canon: The complexity and depth of the setting, the way it's integrated into the story, the subtlety of the magic and the way the mages form an extended family of sorts, the appealing minor characters scattered through the whole thing. The use of language, especially formal/informal pronouns in English, to give depth to dialogue. Mostly, I like everything about the book.

DNWs: Character bashing, "corrective" noncon, focus on underage sex or romance, blood-relative incest (= anything closer than first cousins), serious or permanent harm to cats (mentioned/past harm to cats is ok).

WB: fate of ships that entered the Excession (Culture)
WB: ramifications of easily being able to change gender (Culture)
WB: Sublimation (Culture)
WB: the myriad ways Minds entertain themselves (Culture)

What I like about this canon: the wish fulfillment aspects of it, the humor, the demonstration of the real problems that still exist when scarcity and illness and aging are all fixed, the Minds, the enormous scale, the exploration of the virtual and the alien and the wide variety of characters and their wide variety of interests and hobbies. The elegiac feeling it often evokes when it's being more serious, too. My favorite books of the series are Look to Windward, Player of Games, Hydrogen Sonata, Surface Detail (in that order). My least favorites are Matter and Use of Weapons (also in that order). The others (Excession, Inversions, Consider Phlebas, State of the Art) are in-between; I've read them all, multiple times for all but the two least favorites.

DNW: focus on underage sex or romance, or romantic relationships that began when one character was not yet an adult but the other one was. Serious or permanent harm to cat-like pets (past or mention is fine). Any appearance of Zakalwe, whether under that name or any of his pseudonyms.

Tic Uisine (Imperial Radch)
WB: History of reverence for vestiges on Hwae (Imperial Radch)
WB: Human Geck (Imperial Radch)
WB: Life in Compassionate Removal (Imperial Radch)

I love the whole Imperial Radch series but I'm most interested in Provenance and its characters. If you want to combine these or make additional world-building topics in Provenance parts of the universe, I'm here for it. What I love about Provenance: the characters, the different cultures and how they all interact, the intensity of the strained relationships each of the nominated characters has with their parents and how those tie into the way their world is arranged -- the parental figures have used these characters to advance what they see as the right way of their cultures, and it's cost them all.

DNW: Focus on underage sex or romance (brief references not a problem if necessary for story or world-building), or romantic relationships that began when one character was not yet an adult but the other one was. Serious or permanent harm to cat-like pets (past or mention is fine).

-----------

General likes:

General likes: cats (including cat-like fantasy creatures or spirits), aliens (including cat-like and human-like aliens as well as ones like nothing at all on Earth), friendship, rivalry, enemies, eerie supernatural stuff, unusual settings, ancient history (BCE), science fiction, technology, AI, robots, cyborgs, worldbuilding. Older mature characters.

& ship likes: Loyalty - either one way or mutual, enemies who have a certain understanding, colleagues who rely on each other, colleagues who undermine each other, employee & employer relatioship either with loyalty or with one using the other, parent & child relationships with protectiveness, student & teacher relationships with mutual desire to learn, criminal & victim relationships with complexities, bounty hunter & target relationships where they have to be taken alive (or where the target is just that hard to kill), stranger & potential new friend (but also potential new threat) relationships, allies of convenience. One character noticing things about the other and sharing insights (or not, as their character dictates). Doing something meaningful without being asked. Bickering. Using someone's observed weakness against them. The way only someone close to them can hurt them like that.

/ ship likes: Pining, previous and/or background ships, cheating or adultery, equal partnerships, casual consensual D/s elements, different sorts of beings (like AI/human or vampire/human or AI/vampire or alien/different kind of alien, you get the idea) in love.

Reallly, go with whatever best suits your personal style or your chosen story.
